Catholics simply don't have the means to organise armed resistance over the course of the 18th century says Ian McBride. There's almost like a three-tiered society with a Church of Ireland elite with Presbyterians somewhere below them and with Catholics below them again,. It creates this very tense situation that can burst out into violence at any time during those years.
