In 1852, Jean-Adam and Anthony De Leel were set to be hanged for murder in New Orleans. A massive thunderclap rent the air and lightning crashed all around; nooses slipped from men's necks. The fall had severely injured both men, but they were apparently saved by some form of divine intervention. But it's been claimed that the people of New Orleans remembered something else from that day. Many spotted a tall, strikingly beautiful woman wearing a colorful head wrap known as a tinnyon which identified her as a free woman of color.
