There are obviously so many illusions to the tragedy and the life that disappears and doesn't disappear. I thought the power was in starting with the mom dying, but then I thought you have to go back and see the mom to know who's missed. So that's that theme of vying for attention is a motif throughout the entire book. Yes, there was always that feeling because she was closer with the dad was somewhat the idea but always long for the mother.
