The North and the South: A Shifting Balance
There's a redefinition of what it is to be a gentleman that happens. Thornton says to her at one point, if I won't have any of your gentlemen, I am a man. There's also a real sense that Margaret is instinctively allied to the concepts of independence that are represented in the north. And there's that sense that the north is in a position to disrupt traditional forms of authority in a way that the south isn't.
