The Gift of Music
In 2006 another of Marjorie's sons, Michael, passed away after an illness. Nine years later, in 2015, a third son of hers passed. Coming to terms with these awful losses, Marjorie plunged herself into her music again. The audience are the most important piece of this story, and it made me better. It made me take other kinds of looks at us. Because they've embraced my children. They've taken the sadness and made something joyous. Cheerful. But the joy is there. The beauty is there. This is our culture. I see it as the essence of who African Americans are"
