The History of the Latin Name Anthony and Its Modern Pronunciation
Early modern writers and printers thought the latin name anthony was ultimately a greek name, but it's not. The word has celtic roots, and had always been pronounced with a simple t sound at the front. But in late middle english, it started to pick a t h spelling because it resembled some of the greek words that were coming into heritage. In many cases, the spelling changes are hidden from modern view to day because the pronunciations have evolved over time to incorporate the spellings. This phenomenon was reaching its peak around the current point in our overall story, in the mid 15 hundreds.
