Conlangery #137: Telicity and Lexical Aspect

Conlangery Podcast

CHAPTER

Telicity

Semifactiv William: TELICITY has to do with meaning and aspects have to do with presentation. Different languages have different tests you can apply to determine whether you're dealing with an ATELIC or TELIC sense. In English, a good test is the in a month versus for a month variation,. John built a house in a month, that's okay. John built a House in A Month? That sounds a little bit weird. So if in a month is okay, then we usually think the phrase is TELIC. If it happens more often than one time per year (or even once every few years), I would call this type of achievementATELIC.
