Are Left Wing Movements Bottom Up or Bottom Down?

Do you think left wing movements necessarily have to be bottom up, or is some semblance of a figurehead and leadership needed? You know, i'm of the belief you actually need both of those things. I mean, history has shown that is the only way to effect change. The people who are in power write history. And they write a very distorted view of history to justify their own place in power.
