Before the Jane Austen shift, third person descriptions were clunky. We are permitted to enter Stuart's head, but we do so almost in brackets. It might be with quotation marks or italics, but it's the narrator announcing that a thought of some kind is coming out of Stuart's mind and then the thought. The thoughts are literally spoken aloud.
