In the ancient world, these kinds of towers had a whole different meaning. In this case, it's human technology tied into a certain kind of pride. And so, where this is going to go, you get the image. We're here on the land and I want to be up there in the heavens. Build a tower to get there. But in modern English, that just sounds like, we want to be closer to the sky.
