The Complexity of Whale Communication

The discovery of whale sounds dates to the mid 20th century. It was a rediscovery of something that indigenous whaling cultures have long known. The transmission of acoustic information by whales across large distances in the ocean is now well established. What we don't yet know is whether whales have anything similar to what we believe defines human language and sets it apart from other species.
