From June 30th to July 1st, 1934, more than 200 people are killed without trial. Yet there is one man whom Hitler simply cannot bring himself to execute - Ernst Rome. The trumped up notion of a right-wing coup has given him the excuse in one fell swoop to murder his remaining rivals. This passage in Nazi infamy will soon be given a name: Night of the long knives.
