The First Principles of Moral Reasoning
i agree with fines that prudence has to be on the list of first principles. He calls it practical reasonableness, which is a nice way of putting it. So you're going to side with this traditional view that says we need to have metaphysics and anthropology in order engage in moral reasoning. But more importantly, it's not moral reasoning unless there are prescriptive principles being used in combination with those descriptive truths. And so adler's first principle comes from his interpretation of aristotle's necomician ethics: desire the real good; don't desire apparent goods.
