The Cost of Cruelty
The Christian answer comes back again and again to say, the story that we tell is a story in which God himself has come in person to take the full force of all that evil onto himself. And then something has happened on the cross through which the power of that evil is broken. So this isn't a philosophical answer. It's a way of saying that the philosophical question needs to be confronted by the actual Israel narrative reaching its climax in Jesus.
