The One Child Policy in China

In the early eighties, women in China were required to have a birth permission paper before getting pregnant. If they had an unauthorized second child, you were subject to enormous fines and charges. According to journalist may fong, parents of children born out of plan would be hit with finds between five and ten times their annual disposable income. And if you couldn't pay, the collectors wouldn't just hand you a bill and go home. They would ransack your house for valuables, carrying off precious items like t vs, washing machines and bicycles.
