The fall of toulon sent pol ical shock waves through the whole region. Piedmont was a super power by italian standards, but still a small, weak state compared to the great powers of europe. When victor amedeus joined the coalition against france, these deficiencies were soon laid bare. The piedmontees asked for help from their nearest great power, ally, the austrians. Hapsburgs ruled over a large slice of northern italy to the east of piedmont. They considered areas outside their direct control part of their sphere of influence and thought they had the right to dominate politically.
