In 64 AD, the Christians were still so few in numbers that they just remained a strange eastern curiosity. Tacitus tells us that Nero had some of his victims dressed in animal hides and chased by wild dogs until they collapsed from exhaustion. Others were crucified and then set on fire so they could act as human street lamps to light Nero's gardens. In church lore, the name Nero would become nearly synonymous with Satan.
