The Symbol Grounding Problem

Our understanding of symbols, letters in alphabets and so on, comes from a learning starts at birth. You spend an awful long time building up your cognitive ability to recognize these symbols. Yet we as designers seem to think that we can throw out new icons, you know, left, right and center. And within a few years, we're calling universal.
