Is the Resistance in American Chestnut a Quantitative Resistance?
The resistance in agent chestnuts that's being used for breeding is a quantitative resistance, which is controlled by at least nine separate losi. And it's very difficult to capture all your genetic losi in a breeding program when you have that many different jeans involved. The cycle from flowr seed to flower normally takes about three to five years for male flowering in the field, and then upwards of seven or eight for nuts. We've developed a technique to speed breed these trees now, where we're able to get a nut into a highlight growth chamber and produce pollen in the first year.
