What's the Origin of the Book Banding in the United States?

The first widely band booked book was harriet beecher stowe's uncle tom's cabin, which came out in 18 52. The confederacy banned it from being sold in stores because it was anti slavery. Then after the civil war, the banding continued. By the sixties and seventies, people were basically of disregarding the law and writing and selling books about whatever they wanted. Until right the 19 eighties when suddenly conservative people felt empowered to make another think about books.
