Metternich's Influence on the Empire
As Chancellor, Metternich worked basically hand in glove with the Emperor Franz until he died in 1835. He aggressively reasserted censorship and imprisoned many dissenters. In Italy, where the Habsburg rule was the most unpopular of all their domains, he advised simply buying the Italians off with bread and circuses as the Romans had done. As of 1848, it was a massive domain of about 257,000 square miles, making it geographically the second largest state in Europe.
