Zayn said he was never close to Harry, that he didn't make any friends in the band and that he doesn't have any interest in really keeping up with any of the members. So the inference is that when Zayn left he literally decided to leave and didn't say a word to the band. In an interview with Vogue UK Zayn said there's things that happened and things that were said after I left snide things. He got on a plate and like obviously we need to acknowledge he was clearly struggling so maybe not behaving in the best way full stop but it sounds like he left the band without telling the band.
