The independent order of saint luke started out in baltimore in 18 67 as a secret society that was founded by mary prout. This grew into a fraternal organization that provided support and care when its members were sick and at the end of their lives, including paying for people's burials. When maggie lina mitchell became a member in 18 81, it was as part of the good idea council number 16 of the independent order of the sons and daughters of saint luked's. At that point, she was a student at the richmond colored normal. She was initially supposed to graduate from that school in 18 82, but the school board added a requirement for students
