The Magic of the Elements
The magic of the elements is that you start with things which are so blindingly obvious. And now you use kind of the ideas of logic and deduction to say, well, what follows from that? Out of this emerges 13 chapters of the elements where more and more interesting things are discovered. So I would call mathematics like an intellectual pyramid. These axioms are the foundations of that pyramid. Everything we do and move on is an extra layer on that.
