In Romans chapter two versus one, Paul describes the trap that is sinners we fall into when we suppress the truth and treat love as a reward. When you start out condemning other people, he says, you will yourself end up condemned. So it's not joining God in his work of love to get love. It's joining God in His work of love. That why is the fulcrum on which the gospel itself turns.
