The Real Losers in Teaching
The shift to research based on monetary outcomes affects the way that full time faculty get tenure. It seems to me that when students are engaged in a transactional way, where they come to the university for a particular certificate at a particular monetary value, the substance of what is actually being learned, oftentimes drops out of the equation. As a human as a member of the humanities, I mean, as a philosopher, I'm concerned about this because I don't go for those big grants.
