After the sack of rome by vandals, ravenna was made imperial capital. The city became a powerful landlord for the archbishops who built churches in its marshes to attract ducks and other fish. But they didn't get along very well with non-roman rulers such as yong romulus augustulus - who regarded them as heretical but were christians.
