The Life and Times of a Surfer

Kathy's shift is over, and the plan is for me to give her a ride back to her house in the Palisades. As we head out of Malibu on Pacific Coast Highway, we start talking about what it was like for her when the Gidget movie came out in 1959. Surfing, Kathy says, is completely different now from when she was a kid. When I was serving, there were no contests, no surf music, no surf clothing. It was all, that's what I loved so much about it. She said: "It was way off dead center"
