The City of God

Augustine's argument is that God uses adversity to purify the purified and to sanctify the sanctified. To be fair to Augustine, I think he earnestly means what he says in Book 1 of the City of God. The strangest thing about this attack on ancient Roman culture is that it's based on an extremely small group of often factually sketchy books.
