Black Mountain College: A Progressive and Experimental Liberal Arts School

Black Mountain College was a liberal arts school in rural North Carolina. It was founded by John Andrew Rice and opened between 1933 and 1957. Board members included Albert Einstein, Walter Gropius and Elaine DeKooning. Founder Annie Albers encouraged her students to 'learn through doing' Students were advised to strip away any prior knowledge and leave their egos behind. Former student Ruth Asawa said: I encountered great teachers who gave me enough stimulation to last me for the rest of my life"
