A Brief History of the British Empire

New tastes had been established during those tumultuous years that would never fade. There was famously a ban on theatres for much of the 1650s. The first opera was performed in Covent Garden in 1656, right in the middle of this period. In 1657, the East India Company was granted a new charter and the British state embarked upon its first trans-oceanic colonial mission.
