The ability to burn carbohydrate as a fuel is down regulated, even once your glycygen stores are full again. Your body has adapted to using fat. All the enzynes for carbohydrate are down regulated, and so you just can't tap into that energy when you need it. That's where different modes of training and nutrition can really adapt that metabolic flexibility. Some strategies that have been used in the past influence one of those but you lose the flexibility of the other.
