Theory of inflation predicts that there should be pansion of the universe, and only in kind of models that don't obey perfect cosmological symmetry. This is an extension of what's called the copernican principle which says you're not specially unit. So if we find a departure from that, we're really calling into question the underlying symmetries that we expect the universe hold to. There are even those that say it is bad for society to accept inflation.
What happened before The Big Bang? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Matt Kirshen answer questions about inflation theory, multiverses, the cosmic microwave background, and the possible end of the scientific method with cosmologist Brian Keating
