There wasn't any obvious strategy behind the sanctions, says John Defterios. Western leaders went for easy targets such as freezing assets of individuals, he adds. The aim was to stop Russia from being able to import critical goods like microelectronics and military equipment. In theory, one day those oligarchs who've had their assets frozen will get them back - but that's a long way off.
