The Conflict Between Black Literature and the New Deal
Hurston saw the New Deal as a way of black communities always being held under a kind of thrall to white indulgence and white welfare. Richard Wright's review of this book, which is often published under the title between laughter and tears, basically accuses her of perpetuating a feel-good minstrel show for white audiences. She felt like that totally overlooked the way that black people interacted with each other.
