Every account of mycenaean society places a great deal of emphasis on the palaces. These weren't just buildings where the Wannachs happened to live, but locations where key institutions resided. Scholars argue about just how involved in the everyday economy the palaces really were. Some see the palaces as exercising control over something like a planned and centralized state run economy.
