Contested Meaning-Making and the Role of Land
This chapter explores the contested nature of meaning-making and the multifaceted role of land. It discusses how land is not only a means of production, but also crucial for social and cultural reproduction, examining its significance in local ideas about womanhood, fertility, and sexuality. Additionally, it delves into the concept of landscape and its implications in understanding conflicts over resource access, highlighting the differences in perspective between local communities and government/foreign investors. The chapter also discusses the cancellation of a land deal in Tanzania and the subsequent arbitration case filed by the investor, exposing flaws in the international arbitration system that favors global investors and excludes local communities from participation. Moreover, it explores the impact of such cases on government spending, diverting funds that could benefit the people towards fighting the investor in the arbitration center.
