The Desire for Specialness
I want people to understand the different forms that this takes because we recognize competition on its face as ugly, but then there's this thing in us that just needs to pay our bills and live our lives. It manifests in these forms of competing with people within our organizations, with our own family members, with friends. We don't see it, we're not thinking that it's ugly, we're just trying to survive, but then it's really ugly. The desire for specialness fundamentally shapes all the ego's relationships both individual and collective. All interpersonal conflict and all wars arise from this drive to be above others.
