The author's father was a doctor who developed heart disease at a relatively young age. He became interested in health and fitness as a consequence of his own father's health. After becoming ill, he tried to figure it out for himself by diving into the scientific and medical literature. Eventually ended up running long distances - I've run a couple of marathons in my life.
