Patrick Modiano was born in 1945, less than a year after Paris liberated from the Nazis. His father refused to wear the yellow badge that identified Parisian Jews during the Nazi occupation and made his living dealing in the black market. Unlike most authors, Modiano was often blatantly autobiographical in his novels. He once said he sometimes felt he was just writing the same book over and over again.
