Are Zombi Fires Really Happening?
In the forest of alaska and north west canada, about 90 % of the burned area actually starts with a lightning strike. The so called zombe fires stay alive, smouldering under the snow all winter and then pop up again. If fires really were over wintering, or indeed happening on a large scale, it could have implications for fire management and climate change.
