The idea of language as a kind of form giving or shape giving force is an important one in barfield. Adam gives names to the animals because he consummates creation by imposing order on things that god has already made. God makes all this stuff, but then he invites adam to finalize that creation. It's one of the central ways that we are in his image. The word conceived in the mind is representative of the whole of that which is realized in thought.
