The History of MySQL and MariaDB
The MariaDB project is an outgrowth of that MySQL heritage. Monty made this product named after I think his first daughter, Maya,. He wanted to compete with Oracle's enterprise database. And since then, we've really taken our own view on it. We haven't been a fork in a long time. For example, it's been our own code, which is open source. and we have a thriving community around it.

Summary
The database market has seen unprecedented activity in recent years, with new options addressing a variety of needs being introduced on a nearly constant basis. Despite that, there are a handful of databases that continue to be adopted due to their proven reliability and robust features.
