Fortresses on Sand: The History of Florida -- pt. 1
Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
What Happened in South Florida?
The people in tropical south florida practised very intensive hunting and gathering, the collecting of large stock piles of food resources. And this most likely was a more practical and efficient use of this wet tropical landscape than agriculture. So agriculture was not adopted by the glades or bell glade cultures because it was simply too wet. It was not the right environment for it. Instead, what happened is that the system of procuring food from the natural environment in eco systems, was honed to such a degree of perfection that it could support large, concentrated, even urban, populations without farming.
