The Role of the Party in Corporate Governance in China

There's a line of thinking that China was never really playing our game, and we were just aligned to the ways in which the Communist Party was always intent on control. Is that fair? Were they playing our game up until the point that they decided they didn't want to anymore? I'm not too sure about that, because the party was always in the shadows. But what happened from 2008 to 2009, and especially after 2015, the role of the party became more and more pronounced.
