The history of the letters I and U has been shaped by sound changes and by overuse. The Elizabethan writer John Hart wanted a simple, straightforward spelling system where each letter represented one sound. He never got his wish, but he did raise an awareness that English spelling was out of control and needed to be fixed and standardized.
