This is during what could very rightly be called the dark days of medical science and treatment. People struggling with mental illness, however it may have been loosely defined, were treated not as people who might need help, but as the criminally insane. This was also the age of eugenics, the idea that certain individuals did not deserve be part of society due to perceived traits.
