The most powerful gatherings are ones where people take risksn share stories, show a part of themselves that they may not be used to showing. In the past, if i i could tell my mother what happened, but she wasn't there to witness it, right? It was these two bifricated lives. And so in part, i think the power of a witness in a lot of different parts of your life is somebody who can see all the different parts of you and still want to be there.
So, how do you turn a gathering, whether over a meal or a giant event, into an experience of collective elevation? Priya Parker is on a mission to help us take a deeper look at how anyone can create collective meaning in modern life, one gathering at a time. She is a facilitator, strategic advisor, acclaimed author of The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why it Matters (https://amzn.to/2K95VyJ) and the host of the New York Times podcast, Together Apart (https://pod.link/1506057555). Priya has spent 15 years helping leaders and communities have complicated conversations about community and identity and vision at moments of transition. Trained in the field of conflict resolution, she has worked on race relations on American college campuses and on peace processes in the Arab world, southern Africa, and India.
Parker is a founding member of the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network, a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on New Models of Leadership, and a Senior Expert at Mobius Executive Leadership. In today’s Best Of conversation, we dive into the art of gathering and how to create those shared moments of understanding and transformation, which we could all use more of right now.
