The story really portrays motive god. God responds to moses first act of intercession by saying, ok, i won't destroy them. But then Moses goes down and a bunch of people die. And after those three thousand die, moses says, oh man, you guys have committed a great sin. I moin to go back up to away, and maybe i can atone for your guy's sin. It's as if he has a sense that this isn't over yet. There's still more interceding that needs to be done.
