Focus of attention to execute a motor skill depends on the information that's loaded into the cues that you're paying attention to. External Distal Focus of Attention is over the net in a position on the court that I might want to send a ball. That makes sense that as a tennis player I might focus there rather than my arm swing. And I can also give a proximal example from golf, where they had an internal focus condition and external focus was to focus on the pendulum like motion of the club.
